Find, possible fall: 2022 Dec 3 in Gao, Mali
The Assedreme 001 meteorite was found in 2022 in Mali. On the afternoon of December 3, 2022, the desert sky over Mali’s Timbuktu Region was pierced by a rare and spectacular event: a brilliant daytime fireball. Multiple witnesses across the region reported seeing the celestial visitor streak across the heavens at approximately 2:00 PM, a time when the sun is usually too bright for such sightings. This instantly sparked excitement among locals and the international meteorite community. The sheer brightness of the midday bolide suggested a powerful entry, leaving those who looked up in awe of the raw energy radiating from the Saharan sky.
The story of Assedreme 001 didn’t end with the flash of light; it was followed by an arduous months-long hunt through the rugged terrain of northern Mali. It wasn’t until several months later that dedicated meteorite hunters successfully tracked the debris field to a remote area approximately 25 kilometers northeast of the Assedreme airstrip. What they uncovered was roughly 7 kilograms of pristine, fresh material—a relatively small and exclusive find for such a widely witnessed event. Recovered from the “Piste Assedreme,” these specimens are noted as a “probable” fall.
