Maslyanino Meteorite 199.6g Slice

A Siberian Discovery from the Novosibirsk Plains
Maslyanino was discovered in 1992 near the Russian village of the same name, recovered as a single 26 kg mass from a Siberian wheat field. IAB irons are a “messy” mixture. They contain significant silicate (stone) inclusions trapped inside the iron framework.  Unlike pure metallic irons, the internal sliced and polished surface of Maslyanino is punctuated by distinct silicate inclusions that have been beautifully preserved since their recovery from the temperate Russian plains. These slices offer a rare opportunity to view the intricate interior of a meteorite that was found far from the traditional desert recovery zones.

The Story of an Interrupted Asteroid
Officially classified as an Iron, IAB complex, Maslyanino is 1 of only 83 approved meteorites to hold this sophisticated designation. To describe Maslyanino as having an affinity with primitive achondrites is to tell the story of an asteroid that was “interrupted” while it was trying to become a planet. These slices reveal a stone-metal hybrid that captures the exact moment the metal began to separate from the rock, before the process of differentiation was halted. This heterogeneous mixture of nickel-iron and stony, Winonaite-like inclusions represents a rare, frozen snapshot of the dynamic forces that shaped the early solar system!
