This artifact presentation contains a genuine piece of Apollo 16 flown Command Module “Casper” kapton foil. The Command Module electronics and crew compartments were protected by pressure-sensitive polyimide tape insulation, most commonly referred to as kapton foil. The kapton foil was part of the spacecrafts thermal protection subsystem and coated the exterior of the spacecraft¬†to provide protection against the solar radiation experienced in deep space. During reentry into Earth’s atmosphere much of this foil was burned away with the remains being stripped during post-flight operations and restoration.
