The Spectacular 2006 Bassikounou Fall
At approximately 4 am on the morning of October 16, 2006 a shower of stones fell in and around the village of Bassikounou in the southeast corner of Mauritania, near the border with Mali. Many stones were picked up very shortly after the fall in a 8 km strewnfield, and as a result the jet-black fusion crust has been perfectly preserved.

H5 Chondrite Classification
Classified as an H5 Ordinary Chondrite, the Bassikounou meteorite is a high-iron specimen prized for its remarkably fresh state. Because these stones were recovered almost immediately from the desert floor, they exhibit a velvet-like fusion crust. The interior reveals a bright, light-gray matrix densely populated with shimmering nickel-iron flakes and well-defined chondrules.
