Iron, ungrouped
Found in Brazil,1992

In 1992, miners were prospecting ores in Goias, Brazil. Mr. Laert reported he found a “steel stone” some years back. The group traversed to the locale and utilizing metal detectors discovered a half-buried 2 ton massive rock, near a pond.

A member of the group guessed the “steel stone” a meteorite and was granted permission from the landowner to remove a bit of the stone for official testing. They contacted the Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro, where it was confirmed to be of meteoritic origin!

Campinorte was classified by JT Wasson at UCLA as an unusual iron — not fitting into any known group. We are pleased to present Campinorte oxide fragments. They were collected around where the main mass was discovered.
