Description

Campo del Cielo was originally discovered in 1576 by military personnel commissioned by the governor of Argentina. His interest was piqued by a rumor that natives were utilizing a huge mass of iron for weapons. This impressive meteorite impact is responsible for nearly 25 craters and these iron giants have made the list of the largest meteorites found on Earth. In an unbelievable recent discovery, Gancedo, the third largest, was impressively unearthed in 2016 and weighs in at a whopping 30,800 kilos/67,900 lbs. El Chaco, the fourth largest, tips the scales at 28,840 kilos/63,580 lbs. Even though our available specimens are only a fraction of these heavyweights, they each boast a surprising heft. Coupled with their magnificent regmaglypted surfaces, and overall artistic shapes, Campo del Cielo is the quintessential iron meteorite for any collection.

On January 1, 2008 Argentina implemented a law prohibiting the exportation of meteorites. All of our Campo del Cielo specimens were legally obtained prior to the enactment of that law. We do not trade in illegally exported meteorite specimens.
