Chelyabinsk 69.0g

$1,242.00

  • Meteorite Type: Stone (LL5)
  • Weight: 69 grams
  • Approximate Measurements: 45 mm x 45 mm x 25 mm
  • Witnessed Fall: Yes
  • Additional Information: Fantastic stone that tells many stories of its fiery and violent journey to Earth. This magnificent specimen was broken apart — in space — from the original and much larger mass, giving it a smooth face with pristine jet black fusion crust and possible moderate orientation. The second face collided with another object while in our upper atmosphere. It had time to flash burn, creating a splash of secondary fusion crust. When it hit Earth it cracked on the third face, revealing its stark white interior and shock melt veins. What a meteorite!

Description

Every meteorite enthusiast will forever remember the astonishing news of the truly massive fireball and explosions over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in February of 2013. It was easily the largest meteoritic event since the Sikhote-Alin fall of 1947. Many of these pieces show impact melt features and a dark grey to nearly black interior. This superbolide was traveling at an astonishing speed of 42,900 mph and generated light brighter than sun. The shock wave from the fireball caused damage to over 7,000 buildings spreading across six cities.
