Who doesn’t admire the Labenne meteorite hunting family from La Belle France? Father Marc, and sons Luc and Jim, were true meteorite pioneers who made many significant discoveries in the hot deserts of Northwest Africa during the mid-to-late 1990s. These finds were made some years before the NWA classification system was adopted, and were among the very first Sahara meteorites to be recovered. Each carries a unique hand painted field number, and Luc tells me that most of them were inscribed by his father, Marc.
The Labennes devised a clever and unique numbering systems. For example, the numbering of this specimen — “99604” — indicates that it was the 604th find from the 1999 expedition. I have been friends with the Labennes for well over a decade, and acquired many beautiful stones from them.
When we acquired this slice, it had “impact melt breccia” written on the packing material, but that’s not an official classification.
