A Roman woman, humbly dressed, approaches the towering Temple of Vesta. She is barefoot and carries in her arms offerings for the goddess, hoping to receive blessings for herself and her family in exchange. She would approach the sanctum sanctorum with her gifts and the curtain, which usually concealed this holy place from the public would be open, but only for the duration of the Vestalia festival, celebrating the goddess Vesta.
The name Vesta is derived from the root word meaning “to burn” and as such, the intrinsic bond between the goddess Vesta and fire was well understood by the ancients. The walls of the Temple of Vesta housed the goddess’s holy fire, a symbol of Rome’s safety and prosperity. Followers of Vesta would tend to this fire, growing sacred grain to feed its embers. The hallowed fires of Vesta live on in the flames that surely engulfed the Vesta meteorite, named after the asteroid that takes its moniker from the goddess.
Elegant and timeless, this pendant honors its namesake in design. The following Orphic hymn is dedicated to Vesta: Daughter of Saturn, venerable dame, the seat containing of unweary’d flame; In sacred rites these ministers are thine, Mystics much-blessed, holy and divine; In thee, the Gods have fix’d place, strong, stable, basis of the mortal race; Eternal, much-form’d ever-florid queen, laughing and blessed, and of lovely mien; Accept these rites, accord each just desire, and gentle health, and needful good inspire.
